About Earlston
- Thomas of Erceldoune — Thomas the Rhymer — was a 13th-century Scottish prophet and poet who lived in Earlston (then called Erceldoune). According to legend, Thomas was taken by the Queen of Elfland to her realm under the Eildon Hills, where he spent seven years before returning to the mortal world with the gift of prophecy and a tongue that could not lie. His prophecies — including the prediction of the Battle of Bannockburn — were recorded and circulated for centuries after his death.
- Rhymer's Tower, the ruined 14th-century tower on the edge of Earlston, is traditionally associated with Thomas the Rhymer, though it was built at least a century after his death. The tower is a scheduled ancient monument and one of the most evocative ruins in the Borders — a single wall of red sandstone rising from a grassy mound above the Leader Water. The tower is freely accessible and is a popular stopping point on the A68.
- Cowdenknowes, the estate on the south bank of the Leader Water below Earlston, is one of the most beautiful in the Borders. The house, which dates from the 16th century, was the home of the Home family and is associated with the ballad 'Broom of the Cowdenknowes', one of the most celebrated of the Border ballads. The estate is private, but the Leader Water below it is a good trout stream.
