About Kelso
- Kelso Abbey, founded in 1128 by King David I, was once the largest and wealthiest abbey in Scotland — richer even than Melrose or Jedburgh. The abbey was repeatedly sacked by English armies during the Wars of Independence and the Rough Wooing, and the ruins that remain today represent only a fraction of the original structure. The west tower, which still stands to its full height, gives a sense of the abbey's original grandeur.
- Floors Castle, seat of the Duke of Roxburghe, is the largest inhabited castle in Scotland. The original house was built by William Adam in 1721 and extended by William Playfair in the 1840s, who added the distinctive pepper-pot turrets that give the castle its fairytale silhouette. The castle is visible from Kelso Bridge and from the ruins of the abbey, and the grounds include a walled garden and a holly hedge planted in the 18th century.
- Kelso Racecourse, on the south bank of the Tweed, is one of the most popular jump racing venues in Scotland. The course hosts around 14 meetings a year, and its intimate atmosphere — with the Cheviot Hills as a backdrop — makes it one of the most atmospheric racecourses in Britain. The Morebattle Hurdle and the Premier Chase are among the most prestigious races on the Scottish jump racing calendar.
- Rennie's Bridge, which carries the road from Kelso to Coldstream across the Tweed, was designed by John Rennie the Elder and completed in 1803. Rennie used the same five-arch design for Waterloo Bridge in London, which was completed in 1817 — making Kelso Bridge a prototype for one of the most celebrated bridges in the world. The bridge was widened in 1870 but retains its original elegant proportions.
