About Lauder
- Thirlestane Castle, on the edge of Lauder, is one of the finest Renaissance castles in Scotland. The original tower house was built in the 13th century, but the castle was transformed in the 1670s by the Duke of Lauderdale — one of the most powerful men in Scotland during the Restoration — into a palatial residence with elaborate plasterwork ceilings that are among the finest in Britain. The castle is still the home of the Maitland family and is open to visitors in summer.
- Lauder's most famous historical episode occurred in 1482, when a group of Scottish nobles — led by Archibald Douglas, Earl of Angus — seized King James III's favourite courtiers and hanged them from Lauder Bridge. The incident, known as 'Bell the Cat' after the fable of the mice who proposed to bell the cat, gave Archibald Douglas his nickname 'Bell the Cat' and demonstrated the power of the Scottish nobility to defy even the king.
- The Lammermuir Hills, which rise steeply above Lauder to the north, are one of the most extensive areas of upland moorland in southern Scotland. The hills are managed primarily for grouse shooting, and the heather moorland supports populations of red grouse, curlew, golden plover, and short-eared owl. The Southern Upland Way long-distance footpath crosses the Lammermuirs above Lauder, and the views from the high ground take in the Firth of Forth and the Bass Rock.
- Lauder Common, the area of common land above the town, has been grazed by the townspeople's livestock since the medieval period. The Common Riding, held each August, is one of the oldest in the Borders — riders follow the Cornet as he rides the marches of the common, checking that the boundaries have not been encroached upon. The ceremony is a reminder of the importance of common land to the communities of the Borders.
