About Maxton
- Maxton sits on a bend of the River Tweed where the river curves south before turning east towards Kelso. The village is a quiet agricultural community, with a parish church, a village hall, and a scattering of farms and cottages. The surrounding farmland is typical of the middle Tweed valley — fertile river terraces growing cereals and grass, with the Eildon Hills visible to the west and the Cheviot Hills to the south.
- The River Tweed at Maxton is one of the finest salmon fishing rivers in Scotland, and the pools below the village are among the most productive on the middle Tweed. The river is managed by the River Tweed Commission, and the fishing rights are divided between several estates. The autumn run of salmon, when the fish are running upstream to spawn, is the highlight of the fishing year.
- Maxton Parish Church, which dates from the 12th century, is one of the oldest churches in the Borders. The church was rebuilt in the 18th century but retains some medieval stonework, and the churchyard contains the graves of several generations of the farming families who have worked the Tweed valley. The church is a simple, dignified building typical of the rural kirks of the Borders.
- The Eildon Hills, which rise to 422 metres above Melrose, are visible from Maxton across the Tweed. The hills are one of the most significant archaeological landscapes in Scotland, with an Iron Age hillfort on the summit of the North Hill and a Roman signal station on the same summit.
