About Newcastleton
- Hermitage Castle, 6 miles north of Newcastleton in the heart of Liddesdale, is the most forbidding and atmospheric castle in Scotland. Built in the 14th century by the Douglas family, the castle's massive walls and stark silhouette against the moorland sky have made it one of the most photographed buildings in the Borders. Mary Queen of Scots made her famous 50-mile round trip on horseback to visit the Earl of Bothwell here in 1566, a journey that left her so ill she nearly died. The castle is in the care of Historic Environment Scotland.
- Newcastleton was built in 1793 by Henry Scott, 3rd Duke of Buccleuch, as a planned village to provide employment for the displaced crofters of Liddesdale. The village was laid out on a strict grid plan, with a central green and streets of stone-built cottages for the handloom weavers who were to be the village's main industry. The weaving industry declined in the 19th century, but the village's planned character is still clearly visible in its layout.
- The Waverley Route, which passed through Newcastleton on its way from Edinburgh to Carlisle, was one of the most controversial railway closures of the Beeching era. The line was closed in 1969 despite fierce local opposition, and the closure left Liddesdale as one of the most isolated areas of mainland Britain. Campaigns to reopen the line as far as Newcastleton have been ongoing for decades, and the trackbed is now a walking and cycling route.
- Liddesdale, the valley in which Newcastleton sits, was one of the most lawless areas of the Border Marches during the Reiver period of the 15th and 16th centuries. The Armstrongs, who dominated the valley, were the most powerful of the Border Reiver families — at their peak they could field 3,000 mounted men — and their raids into England and Scotland were a constant source of conflict. The valley's remote character made it difficult for either government to control, and the Armstrongs operated with virtual impunity for generations.
