About Great Ayton
- Captain James Cook, the greatest navigator and explorer of the 18th century, spent his childhood in Great Ayton. Cook's family moved to the village when he was eight years old, and he attended the village school — now the Captain Cook Schoolroom Museum — before leaving to work as a shop boy in Staithes. The museum tells the story of Cook's early life and his connections to the village, and is one of the most visited attractions in the North York Moors.
- Roseberry Topping, the distinctive conical hill that rises above Great Ayton, is one of the most recognisable landmarks in the north of England. The hill — sometimes called the 'Matterhorn of Cleveland' — rises to 320 metres above sea level and offers outstanding views over the Tees Valley, the North Sea, and the North York Moors. The hill is managed by the National Trust and is one of the most popular walking destinations in the area.
- All Saints Church in Great Ayton contains the grave of James Cook's mother, Grace, and five of his siblings. The church is a Grade I listed building and is one of several in the Cleveland area with connections to the Cook family. The churchyard is a place of pilgrimage for those interested in the life of the great navigator.
- The Cook family home in Great Ayton was purchased by an Australian businessman in 1934 and dismantled stone by stone, then shipped to Melbourne, where it was rebuilt in Fitzroy Gardens. The site of the cottage in Great Ayton is marked by a monument, and a replica of the cottage stands in the village.
