About Heriot
- Heriot sits on the watershed between the Tweed and Forth river systems, at an altitude of around 300 metres in the heart of the Moorfoot Hills. The village is one of the most remote in the Borders, with a population of fewer than 100 people, and the surrounding moorland is some of the most extensive in southern Scotland. The A7, which passes through the village, is the main road between Edinburgh and the Borders.
- The Moorfoot Hills above Heriot are managed primarily for grouse shooting, and the heather moorland supports one of the highest densities of red grouse in Scotland. The hills are also important for upland wading birds — curlew, golden plover, and dunlin all breed on the high ground — and for birds of prey, including merlin, peregrine, and short-eared owl. The Southern Upland Way crosses the Moorfoots above the village.
- Dewar's Loch, a reservoir in the hills above Heriot, supplies water to the Edinburgh area and is a popular fishing loch. The loch is stocked with brown trout, and the fishing is managed by a local angling club. The walk from Heriot to the loch and the surrounding hills is one of the finest in the Moorfoots, with views that take in the Firth of Forth and the Bass Rock on clear days.
- Heriot Parish Church, which dates from the 18th century, serves the scattered farming community of the surrounding hills.
