About Hove
- Hove's Regency and early Victorian architecture is among the finest in Britain — a sequence of squares, terraces, and crescents built between the 1820s and the 1850s that represents the most complete surviving example of Regency town planning outside Bath. Brunswick Square and Brunswick Terrace, designed by Charles Busby in the 1820s, are the centrepiece of this development — a formal composition of stucco-fronted houses arranged around a central garden that faces the sea, with a grandeur and consistency of design that reflects the ambitions of the developers who built them. The Brunswick estate, which was built on land reclaimed from the sea, was intended to attract the wealthy visitors who were flocking to Brighton in the wake of the Prince Regent's patronage, and it succeeded in creating one of the most fashionable addresses on the south coast.
- Hove Cricket Ground, the home of Sussex County Cricket Club, is one of the most atmospheric cricket grounds in England — a compact, intimate ground surrounded by Victorian and Edwardian houses, with a pavilion that dates from 1872 and a playing surface that has hosted some of the most significant matches in the history of county cricket. Sussex, the oldest county cricket club in England, was founded in 1839 and has produced a number of England internationals including Ranjitsinhji, the Indian prince who played for Sussex and England in the 1890s and whose elegant batting style transformed the game. The ground's proximity to the sea means that sea frets and coastal breezes can affect play, giving it a character unlike any other county ground.
- Hove has a strong claim to be the birthplace of British cinema — it was here, in the workshops and studios of the Brighton and Hove film pioneers, that some of the earliest narrative films in the world were made. George Albert Smith, who worked in Hove, developed the technique of close-up photography and editing that made narrative cinema possible, and his films of the late 1890s and early 1900s — including Grandma's Reading Glass and As Seen Through a Telescope — are among the earliest examples of film editing in the world. The Brighton School of filmmakers, which included Smith, James Williamson, and Esme Collings, made a contribution to the development of cinema that has only recently been fully recognised by film historians.
