About Liverton Mines
- Liverton Mines developed as a mining hamlet in the 19th century, when ironstone was discovered in the Cleveland Hills above the village. The mines employed workers from across the north of England and from Ireland, and the hamlet grew rapidly with rows of terraced houses built to accommodate the mining families. The last mine in the area closed in the early 20th century.
- The hamlet is close to the village of Liverton, which has a much longer history — the parish church of St Michael dates from the Norman period and is one of the oldest buildings in East Cleveland. The church contains some fine Norman stonework and is a Grade II listed structure.
- The Cleveland Hills above Liverton Mines are part of the North York Moors National Park and offer outstanding walking country. The Cleveland Way long-distance footpath passes through the hills, and the views from the escarpment take in the Tees Valley and the North Sea.
- The area around Liverton Mines is rich in industrial archaeology, with the remains of 19th-century ironstone workings visible in the hills. The landscape has been shaped by over a century of mineral extraction, and the spoil heaps and tramway routes of the Victorian mining industry are a distinctive feature of the East Cleveland hills.
