About Marton
- Captain James Cook was born in a farmhouse in Marton on 27 October 1728, the son of a farm labourer from Scotland. The farmhouse no longer exists, but a granite urn marks the site of his birth in Stewart Park. Cook went on to become the greatest explorer of his age, making three voyages to the Pacific and charting the coasts of New Zealand, Australia, and the Pacific islands. He was killed in Hawaii in 1779 during his third voyage.
- Stewart Park, which surrounds the Captain Cook Birthplace Museum, is one of the finest parks in Teesside. The park was donated to the town by Councillor Henry Bolckow in 1928 and covers 120 acres of parkland, woodland, and formal gardens. The park includes a miniature railway, a children's farm, and a café, and is one of the most popular green spaces in Middlesbrough.
- The Captain Cook Birthplace Museum, opened in 1978 to mark the 250th anniversary of Cook's birth, tells the story of his life and voyages through exhibits, models, and interactive displays. The museum is one of the most visited attractions in Teesside and attracts visitors from across the world, particularly from Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific islands that Cook explored.
- James Cook University Hospital, which stands on the southern edge of Marton, is named in honour of the town's most famous son. The hospital, which opened in 2003, is the main acute hospital for Teesside and serves a population of over 800,000 people. It is one of the largest hospitals in the north of England and has a national reputation for cardiac surgery and cancer treatment.
