About Port Mulgrave
- Port Mulgrave harbour was built in the 1850s by Charles Palmer, a Tyneside shipbuilder and ironmaster, to ship ironstone from the mines in the Cleveland Hills to his ironworks on the Tyne. The harbour was cut into the rock at the foot of the cliffs and connected to the mines above by a tunnel and a tramway. At its peak, the harbour shipped thousands of tonnes of ironstone each year. The ironstone trade declined in the late 19th century and the harbour fell out of commercial use.
- The harbour at Port Mulgrave is one of the smallest and most remote on the Yorkshire coast. It is accessible only by a steep path down the cliff face, and the handful of fishing boats that use it today are hauled up the slipway by hand. The harbour is a remarkable survival of the Victorian industrial heritage of the Yorkshire coast.
- The Cleveland Way long-distance footpath passes along the cliff top above Port Mulgrave, and the views from the path take in the harbour below and the North Sea beyond. The stretch of coast between Port Mulgrave and Staithes to the north is one of the most dramatic on the Cleveland Way.
