About South Bank
- The Transporter Bridge, which connects South Bank to Port Clarence on the north bank of the Tees, is one of the most iconic structures in Teesside. Built in 1911, the bridge carries a gondola suspended from a high-level gantry 160 feet above the river, transporting vehicles and pedestrians across the Tees. The bridge is one of only a handful of transporter bridges still in operation in the world and is a Grade II* listed structure.
- South Bank was at the heart of the Teesside steel industry in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Bolckow and Vaughan ironworks, established nearby in the 1840s, were among the first in Teesside and helped to transform the area from farmland to one of the most industrialised regions in the world. The steel industry declined from the 1970s onwards, and the last major works in the area closed in the 1990s.
- The Eston Hills, which rise above South Bank to the south, are an important landmark in the Teesside landscape. The hills are part of the North York Moors National Park and offer outstanding views over the Tees Valley and the North Sea. The Cleveland Way long-distance footpath passes along the ridge of the hills.
