About Cargo Fleet
- Cargo Fleet was the site of one of the most important ironworks in Teesside — the Cargo Fleet Iron Company, established in 1880. The ironworks produced pig iron and steel for the construction industry and the shipyards of the Tees, and at its peak employed thousands of workers. The works closed in the 1970s, and the site has since been redeveloped for industrial and residential use.
- The River Tees at Cargo Fleet is tidal, and the area was historically used for the loading and unloading of iron ore, coal, and finished steel products. The riverside wharves were busy with shipping traffic in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and the area was one of the most industrialised stretches of the Tees.
- The Riverside Stadium, home of Middlesbrough FC, is a short distance to the west of Cargo Fleet. The stadium, built in 1995 on the banks of the Tees, is one of the finest football grounds in the north of England and holds 34,000 spectators.
- Cargo Fleet has undergone significant change in recent decades as the heavy industries that once dominated the area have closed. New housing and industrial estates have replaced the former ironworks, and the riverside has been improved with new footpaths and green spaces.
