About Clovenfords
- Clovenfords was famous in the 19th century for its vineries — large heated glasshouses that produced grapes for the Edinburgh market. The village's position in the sheltered Tweed valley, with its relatively mild climate, made it ideal for viticulture, and at its peak the Clovenfords vineries supplied a significant proportion of the grapes consumed in Edinburgh. The vineries have long since disappeared, but the village's association with the grape trade is remembered in local history.
- Sir Walter Scott was a regular visitor to Clovenfords, stopping at the village inn on his journeys between Edinburgh and Abbotsford. The inn, which still stands in the village, was a favourite stopping point for travellers on the road between Edinburgh and the Borders, and Scott's visits are commemorated by a plaque on the building. The village is within easy reach of Abbotsford, Scott's home two miles to the east.
