About Egton
- The Egton Bridge Old Gooseberry Society, founded in 1800, holds the oldest gooseberry show in England. The show is held on the first Tuesday in August in the village schoolroom, and competitors bring their finest gooseberries to be weighed and judged. The show attracts competitors and visitors from across the north of England and is one of the most unusual and charming events in the North York Moors calendar.
- The Church of St Hedda at Egton Bridge is one of the finest Catholic churches in the north of England. Built in 1866 in a Romanesque style, the church contains a remarkable collection of religious art and furnishings, including a set of Stations of the Cross carved in oak. The church is dedicated to St Hedda, a 7th-century Bishop of Winchester, and is a place of pilgrimage for Catholics from across the north.
- Blessed Nicholas Postgate, a Catholic priest who was martyred in 1679 for administering the sacraments during the period of Catholic persecution, was born near Egton. Postgate ministered to the Catholic community of the North York Moors for over 50 years, travelling the dales on horseback to celebrate Mass in secret. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1987.
