About Glaisdale
- Beggar's Bridge, a graceful single-arch packhorse bridge over the River Esk at Glaisdale, was built in 1619 by Thomas Ferris — a local man who, according to tradition, built the bridge so that his sweetheart Agnes Richardson could cross the river to meet him without getting her feet wet. Ferris went on to make his fortune as a merchant in Hull and returned to build the bridge as a gift to the village. The bridge is a Grade I listed structure and is one of the most photographed in the North York Moors.
- Arncliffe Wood, which covers the steep valley sides above Beggar's Bridge, is one of the finest ancient woodlands in the North York Moors. The wood is managed by the Woodland Trust and is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, supporting a rich flora of bluebells, wood anemones, and wild garlic. The wood is at its most spectacular in spring, when the bluebells carpet the valley floor.
- The Esk Valley Railway, which passes through Glaisdale station, is one of the most scenic railway lines in Britain. The line runs through the heart of the North York Moors between Middlesbrough and Whitby, and the stretch between Glaisdale and Whitby passes through some of the finest scenery on the entire route. The journey from Glaisdale to Whitby takes about 30 minutes.
- Glaisdale Dale, which runs south from the village into the heart of the moors, is one of the most beautiful and least visited dales in the North York Moors.
