About Grosmont
- Grosmont is the northern terminus of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, one of the finest heritage steam railways in England. The railway runs for 18 miles through the heart of the North York Moors to Pickering, passing through some of the most spectacular moorland scenery in England. The railway was originally built by George Stephenson in 1836 and is one of the oldest railway routes in the world. The engine sheds at Grosmont are open to visitors and house a remarkable collection of preserved steam locomotives.
- The remains of Grosmont Priory, a small Benedictine monastery founded in the 12th century, stand on the edge of the village. The priory was dissolved in 1535 and only fragmentary remains survive, but the site is a reminder of the long monastic history of the North York Moors. Several of the great monasteries of the moors — Rievaulx, Byland, and Whitby — were founded in the 12th century.
- Grosmont was an important ironstone mining and smelting centre in the 19th century, and the remains of the ironworks are still visible in the village. The ironstone was mined in the hills above the village and smelted in blast furnaces on the valley floor. The industry declined in the late 19th century as the richer ironstone seams of the Cleveland Hills were developed.
- The village is one of the few in the North York Moors served by two railway lines — the Esk Valley Railway and the North Yorkshire Moors Railway — making it an excellent base for exploring the national park without a car. The combination of steam trains, moorland walking, and the scenic Esk Valley makes Grosmont one of the most popular destinations in the national park.
