About Staithes
- Staithes is famous as the place where James Cook, the great explorer and navigator, served his apprenticeship as a grocer's boy before going to sea. Cook worked in a shop in Staithes from 1745 to 1746, and the experience of watching the ships in the harbour is said to have inspired his desire to go to sea. The Captain Cook and Staithes Heritage Centre tells the story of Cook's connection with the village.
- The village is one of the most dramatically sited on the Yorkshire coast, built in a deep cleft in the cliffs where Roxby Beck meets the sea. The narrow streets and alleyways of the village, lined with fishermen's cottages, can only be reached on foot from the car park above. The village has been a favourite subject for artists since the 19th century.
- Boulby Cliff, to the north of Staithes, is the highest cliff on the east coast of England, rising to 203 metres above sea level. The cliff is a dramatic feature of the Cleveland Way and offers outstanding views along the coast.
- Staithes has a strong fishing heritage, and the village was once home to a substantial fleet of cobles — the traditional flat-bottomed fishing boats of the Yorkshire coast. A small number of fishing boats still operate from the village, and fresh fish and shellfish are available from the quayside.
