About Whitby
- Whitby Abbey, managed by English Heritage, is one of the most dramatically sited ruins in England, perched on the East Cliff above the town. The abbey was founded in 657 AD by St Hilda and was the site of the Synod of Whitby in 664 AD, at which the date of Easter for the English church was decided. The ruins of the 13th-century Gothic church are among the most impressive in the north of England.
- Bram Stoker visited Whitby in 1890 and was inspired by the town's atmosphere, the abbey ruins, and a local story about a Russian ship called the Dmitri to write Dracula. The novel's Count Dracula arrives in England at Whitby, and the town has embraced its Gothic heritage with the biannual Whitby Goth Weekend, one of the largest goth festivals in the world.
- Captain James Cook, the great explorer and navigator, grew up in the nearby village of Great Ayton and served his seafaring apprenticeship in Whitby. The ships that Cook used on his voyages of exploration — Endeavour, Resolution, Discovery, and Adventure — were all built in Whitby. The Captain Cook Memorial Museum, housed in the house where Cook lodged as a young man, tells the story of his life and voyages.
