- Kilton Castle, the ruins of which stand on a promontory above the valley, was a medieval fortification built by the de Thweng family in the 12th century. The castle was one of several fortifications in the East Cleveland hills that guarded the approaches to the coast. The ruins are fragmentary but the earthworks of the castle mound are still clearly visible.
